Unaccounted For

Mohawk Airshows Mission:

Sadly, there are still 1,636 soldiers that remain unaccounted for from the Vietnam War. These are the true unsung heroes of the conflict because they never returned to be honored for their service. Grateful Americans cannot give them the smallest of courtesies, a handshake or a thank you, but we can fight to bring them home.

In 2015, Mohawk Airshows took on the great patriotic endeavor of painting all 1,636 lost soldiers’ names on the fuselage of their aerobatic demonstration Grumman OV-1 Mohawk. What a breathtaking sight as the names cover almost the entire twin-engine reconnaissance aircraft. Standing next to this large warbird and scanning through each soldier’s name evokes feelings of pride, gratitude and sadness

Lead pilot, Joe Masessa, stated, “We are proud to be the world’s first POW/MIA flying monument. This is our thank you to these men and women, our way to say that they are not forgotten, and our promise to fight for them as they fought for us. We vow to attend as many airshows as possible to bring awareness to, and gain support for, our mission to help recover these brave soldiers. We will not stop flying until every man and woman is accounted for.”

The Mohawk is a twin engine turboprop observation and light attack aircraft intended to operate from short, unimproved runways in support of US Army maneuver forces. It served from Vietnam through Operation Desert Storm.
